Numerical Reference

04-01-2021

Numerical Reference is a website that shows your input in comparison to some known measurements in order to give you a point of reference. It is inspired by a similar feature on Wolfram Alpha.

In an effort to avoid a database, I decided to use something much worse: a CSV file. I am not sure what prompted me to use this format specifically, but it was not a good idea. The CSV file contains a set of entries describing a measurement, a unit, and a link to the source of the data. When the user inputs a measurement, it collects all measurements with the same unit, calculates the ratio to the input value, and sorts them based on the distance from 1.0 to this ratio.

This used to be hosted on numericalreference.com for a while, but I abandoned it. If there's anything at that address right now, it's not mine, so be careful.
